Little Monkey's Nursery

Pre School

From the age of 3 onwards the children become immersed within the Little Monkeys Preschool. Following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) the children work towards Early Learning Goals in six areas.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Communication, Language and Literacy

  • Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World

  • Physical Development

  • Creative Development

These Early Learning Goals are the knowledge, skills and understanding which children are hoped to have acquired by the end of the academic year in which they reach the age of 5. The six areas are all equally important and when combined with each other, ensure a rounded approach to children’s development. The six areas are delivered through carefully planned, purposeful play, where there is a balance between child-initiated and adult-led activities.

Each child's key person uses observations to record the progress, interests and abilities each child demonstrates and then uses these observations to inform future planning and devise experiences which will not only interest the children but will also help them forward onto their next steps of development.

One area of the EYFS which is particularly focused on during pre-school is 'phonics'. The term phonics refers to the sounds made by letters. Here at Little Monkeys we base our phonics work on a published scheme that is used in the Foundation stage in a number of schools both nationally and within the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. This is called Jolly Phonics. It is written by Sue Lloyd and published by Jolly Learning Ltd. (It is available to buy in Waterstones bookshops and the Early Learning Centre). Through this scheme the children become immersed in many different activities, develop their speaking and listening skills, are introduced to the phonic (a new phonic is introduced every 2 weeks) and explore these through a variety of mediums. This multi-sensory approach encourages the children to recognise the sound of a letter, the 'look' of a letter and uses actions and songs to bring these alive.

Government funding is available to children attending morning, afternoon or all day sessions in the academic terms after they turn 3. This funding amount is deducted from the monthly fee and leaves a balance which is payable as per the usual terms and conditions of the nurseries.
